Chapter Nineteen

Harlow woke to the gentle sway of the boat and soft sunlight drifting through her window. She burrowed deeper under her covers, her sight catching on the golden pin settled on her bedside table where it had sat for two nights now. Reaching out, she grasped it, bringing it close to study. Not that she hadn’t stared at it for a good part of the night once again.

Or replayed in her mind the way she’d nearly kissed Blake that evening.

She couldn’t figure him out or the effect he had on her, but there was no denying he did have an effect, and that fact posed a problem. This attraction hurled her toward a world of hurt. They couldn’t even get ten minutes alone before another woman carted him off, and in those private moments, who knew what Blake said to them.

Had he bought them all special trinkets? Was it part of the game?

If so, he was a skilled player. Everything about him seemed honest and vulnerable when he was with her, like he rolled down a portion of the tinted window that separated him from the world and gave her a glimpse of the real Blake Carlton.

Pushing the thoughts away and herself out of bed, she headed for the bathroom. At least here they each had their own rooms. Not that she didn’t enjoy Tarynn, but she needed space. Her conflicting emotions kept her crowded enough. Even yesterday, when they’d had a down day in Bratislava, Harlow had taken her camera and avoided everyone. Her hope had been to bring her wandering feelings into line. It didn’t happen.

After getting ready, she climbed the stairs to the top deck. With the warm morning, they were serving breakfast outdoors. The venue provided her first glimpse of Vienna since they’d arrived in the middle of the night.

Vienna.

Unbelievable.

Tarynn waved her over, and Harlow crossed to where she sat, noting each of the women still there. She might need space, but she also needed to see these women, because each interaction with them helped keep her head on straight. Reminded her that none of this was real. Even if she did possess the ability to peg Blake, to glimpse a part of him not normally seen, none of that meant he was going to pledge his undying love.

Or that she even wanted him to.

Okay. She needed coffee.

Harlow flipped up her cup and went to grab egg whites and fruit from the buffet. When she returned, Tarynn smiled at her. “Any guesses on who gets today’s date and where it’ll be?”

Not a game she wanted to play. “No idea.”

“How’d you like Bratislava?”

“It was nice. I toured the castle.” She dug into her eggs. “You?”

“Shopped—not that there were many stores—and saw the castle too.”

“How’s the seasickness?”

“Nonexistent.” Tarynn bit into her croissant. “This boat has nothing on the big cruise liners.”

Floating down the Danube with the capacity of two hundred cruisers, this vessel didn’t even fit the same category.

Charlie and Tad walked on deck, the red lights gleaming on their cameras.
